Drug-Drug interactions with Cannabis

One third of Americans are using Cannabis, some recreationally some medicinally, but either way it's important to know that taking Cannabis products can interact with other drugs. What does this mean? Cannabinoids such as THC and CBD need to be broken down in the liver before they can be excreted from the body. Enzymes break down drugs and cannabinoids. The majority of compounds are broken down by 6 specific enzymes in the body. The likelihood of drugs and cannabinoids needing to be broken down by the same type of enzyme is high. Make sure that it is safe to take Cannabis with other medications because if the same enzyme needs to break down too many things, it can cause altered concentrations of the drugs leading to adverse effects.
